Austal USA Honored with Large Company of the Year Award
MOBILE, Ala. – Austal USA was recognized by Business Alabama as the 2024 Large Company of the Year at their annual awards luncheon in Birmingham, Ala., Friday, February 28. According to Alec Harvey, Business Alabama Magazine Executive Editor, these awards honor the best in Alabama business.
“Austal USA is honored to receive this prestigious award from Business Alabama,” said President Michelle Kruger. “Having our hard work and commitment to the defense of our great nation recognized in this manner is a great source of pride for our entire Austal USA family.”
In accepting the award, Larry Ryder, Austal USA Vice President of Business Development and External Affairs, stated the award was a reflection of the “highly skilled, dedicated and patriotic Austal USA workforce and the entire shipbuilding team consisting of our Mobile-area community in south Alabama, the state, and our network of 250 Alabama-based teammates and suppliers.”
Austal USA, celebrating 25 years in Mobile, has delivered 32 ships to the Navy since 2009 and, carrying a $10 billion backlog of work, is currently constructing ten ships from six different programs. The company also has modules in production for both the Virginia and Columbia-class submarine programs and aircraft elevators for U.S. Navy Ford-class aircraft carriers.
In addition to Austal USA’s nearly one million square feet of existing enclosed manufacturing space, a new final assembly building to manufacture Navy and Coast Guard surface ships, and a dedicated submarine module production facility are both under construction. When complete they will add over 600,000 square feet of indoor production area supporting 2,000 new jobs to the workforce.
