Austal USA's 2023 Charity Golf Invitational raises over $200 thousand for local charities

Mobile, Ala. – Austal USA raised over $200 thousand for local charities through its annual golf invitational held at the Robert Trent Jones Magnolia Springs Golf Course late last week. Proceeds from the event will benefit three local charities: Mulherin Home, United Way of Southwest Alabama (UWSWA), and veteran assistance charity Eagles Landing, through Volunteers of America (VOA) Southeast.

The tournament was first held in 2012 as a means to give back to the Mobile community and the surrounding region. Partnering charities are selected annually and represent organizations that are aligned to Austal USA’s corporate giving objectives and have meaningful impact on the lives of south Alabamians. To date, Austal USA has infused over $2 million into the Mobile area.

“It is so important to Austal USA that we are a strong corporate citizen,” Austal USA President Rusty Murdaugh said. “This event provides our team with an opportunity to give back to a community that has continually supported us and has been critical to our growth. Just as important, it gives us an opportunity to say thank you and show support for organizations that are improving quality of life and helping our community thrive.”

This year’s charitable recipients were selected for their wide-ranging support and impact. Mulherin Home provides housing and full-time care for individuals with developmental disabilities. UWSWA identifies educational, health and financial needs and brings together businesses, donors, non-profits and community leaders to achieve outcomes. VOA Southeast’s Eagles Landing program provides a variety of services and resources to veterans and their families, including permanent and transitional housing, case management, and assistance with daily living skills, finding employment, and accessing health care.

“United Way of Southwest Alabama is a proud partner of Austal’s Annual Charity Golf Invitational. Austal USA is committed to fostering a culture that values diversity, enhances civic pride and builds prosperity in the communities they do business. Their efforts are directly in line with our mission to improve quality of life,” said Vice President of Resource Development, Justine Bixler. “We are honored to be a beneficiary of the tournament and the generous spirit of their employees that creates transformative change across Southwest Alabama.”

A major reason for the success of the invitational is the strong participation and relationships of Austal USA’s vendors and suppliers. Their support has enabled Austal USA to donate more money year-after-year. In total, 264 golfers and 85 corporate sponsors helped make the outing a success.

“When I say we have the best shipbuilder team, our shipbuilders are the foundation, but that team absolutely encompasses our suppliers here in the gulf region and across the nation,” said Murdaugh. “Everyone operates with a team mentality. Our suppliers’ commitment to not only support us in the shipyard but also in the community is what makes the team special.”
